Shouldn't this question be phrased 'Who is your fave author'? What signifies that the author is a thing and not human. My favorite artist/illustrator is Michael Whelan. With Luis Royo coming in a close second. If you mean older illustrators or artists the best in the business in my opinion was Frank Frazetta.

I'm old school. I like Harry Clarke's illustrations for Poe's tales of Mystery and Imagination about as well as any illustrations I've ever seen.

I'm old school too. I remember my delight at seeing Arthur Rackham's illustrations in my first storybooks, and the charm of his drawings and paintings continues to send me straight into the realms of imagination:
