It apparently means either "laugh out loud" or "lots of love", but is unfortunately used so indiscriminately that it has become practically meaningless - some people seem to just type LOL or lol just for the sake of it, sometimes seemingly in the most inappropriate places, and you're supposed to guess which meaning they intend !!!
