If it's front wheel drive and the noise goes thump thump thump, it is the CV joint.

A knock will be a drive shaft, a whine is usually a wheel bearing, if it sings then Madonna set up home there and is profusely squatting!!! Probably going to be the drive shaft clunking though, not too difficult to fix and not normally that necessary, they'll go for longer thant the car like that, but if it does shear, you could end up just about anywhere!!!!

If it's a loud thump when you steer to the left it's probably because you hit the kerb.

this has got to be a worn c.v. joint.if it happened steering left and right it would be to do with your power steering,ie,low steering fluid, noisey steering pump, straining harder on lock to lock etc.the noise you should be hearing for a worn c.v.is going to be mild, fast, clunking type noise.try driving around in a circle on full lock,no need to drive fast.

If it sounds like a grasshopper calling for a mate it would be a wheel bearing on the way out.
For your safety get it checked out properly.

if its a repeating knocking sound check it could be the driveshaft also or one of the cv joints
