It is an herb essentially--coming from a shrub or small tree.

It is an astringent herb which means it tightens up skin...it is has anti inflammatory and other properties.

In the 50's in the little lulu comics, I believe the name of the witch in her scarecrow boy stories was witch hazel also.

Yes, I was right..that was her name ol witch hazel and her niece little itch..
