I've recently done an intensive course in plumbing (city & guilds 6129), however, am finding it incredibly hard to gain any practical work experience - can anyone help?

1. Check out all the usuals (Yellow Pages, internet) for local plumbers, and see if they need a plumber's mate.
2. You could consider doing unpaid work with them for a (short) while, just to prove your ability.
3. Or how about setting up on your own - get a business loan for tools and purchase of parts. I would have thought that most plumbers were self-employed.
4. See if you can contact others from the course and see how they are getting on.
5. Maybe you could set up as a partnership with one or more persons from the course.
6. If you prefer not to be self-employed, you could check on the big employers with maintenance teams (NHS hospital trusts and local councils), and see if they need, and are recruiting, plumbers.

I would suggest writing lots and lots of letters enclosing your CV to companies out of your local phone book. Most companies will respond to you and even if they have no vaccancies may well keep your CV on file should a position become available.
You have gained the qualification but because you haven't any practical experience you may not appeal to some employers in the industry as they will have to pay you at the grade according to your age/qualification although someone of a similar age may have years of practical experience to offer for the same pay.

You could try the yellow pages, and phone plumbers to see if there is any work. Make sure they are properly regestered though!
Try as well the local council, there are plenty of public buildings that need a plumber.
If there is no work at present try a volunteer agency. It wont pay true, but it would be in your favour.
