Winter begins in June in the Southern Hemisphere.

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere then the longest night falls arround about the 23rd December and Midwinter day falls on the 21st.

Technically the seasons change on or about the 21st of the appropriate month. SO, winter doesn't ACTUALLY begin until December 21st! Therefore, this makes you both right!

In Auatralia it is summer and very hot I live in queensland and the weather up here in hot hot hot in December.

it depends in which hemisphere you are. if you are in the southern hemisphere then it is summers in december and winters in june!
