try melatonin, a natural sleep aid that is very effective with no known side effects no matter how high the dose.

It is also one of the top antioxidants.

Start with 3 mg (timed release if possible)..if that doesn't work, try 5mg...this is how much I take but you can go higher if necessary..my nephew said he woke up 18 times a night and slept through with the melatonin (I have even seen it at dollar gereral for a few dollars a bottle).

Also get real lavendar essential oil (from a health food store...must be real and not synthetic to have healing properties and spinkle it on your pillow or a tissue and breathe deeply. This is especially good if the insomnia is stress related or you are stressed about not sleeping.

try these before resorting to dangerous drugs.

Some sleeeping herbs are hops, valerian, lemon balm, chamomile, passionflower, and catnip. Take a tincture dose and also with lavendar, hops, lemon balm, chamomile, and catnip..make a little pillow or use a sock and fill it with herbs and breathe..also try putting lavendar essential oil on it (or maybe jasmine essential oil.which works for some)

Depending on your age, which I obviously don't know, it may be due to menopause or something like that. Stress could also be another factor. You need to find the reason you're not sleeping, then you can do something about it. If it's not hormonal you can still try a few things. There is a hormone your body produces while you sleep in complete darkness, it's called Melatonin you can buy it at the drug store and this may help you sleep. Consider your sleeping conditions, is it quiet, dark, etc? If you can't stop thinking about the day or what may happen tomorrow you may have to practice some relaxation methods. Usually the only time I have difficulty sleeping is when I'm super angry as I just can't 'rest'...or if you lounge before bed, like watch tv. Try staying away from sitting or laying before bed so that when you crawl into your nice warm bed you're so glad to finally lie down you can't help but doze off. It's a difficult question to answer without knowing the reasons why you cannot sleep.

A perfect sleeping tablet would cause sleep, but have no possible problems. Unfortunately, there is no perfect sleeping tablet. Possible problems when taking sleeping tablets include the following.

Drowsiness the next day. You may not be safe to drive or to operate machinery.
Clumsiness, drowsiness, and confusion in the night if you have to get up. For example, you may fall over and injure yourself if you get up in the night to go to the toilet. Some people have fallen down stairs due to the drowsy effect of sleeping tablets. (Older people who take sleeping tablets have an increased risk of breaking their hip.)
Tolerance. With benzodiazepines and Z drug sleeping tablets (see below), if you take them each night, your body becomes used to them. This means that, in time, the usual dose has no effect. You then need a higher dose for it to work. In time, the higher dose does not work, and you need an even higher dose, and so on. It only takes between 3-14 days of continued use to become 'tolerant' to a benzodiazepine or Z drug sleeping tablet.
Dependence. Some people become dependent (addicted) to benzodiazepine or Z drug sleeping tablets. This means that withdrawal symptoms occur if the tablets are stopped suddenly. Typical withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, shaking, or just feeling awful.
Benzodiazepines and Z drugs
Benzodiazepines drugs are commonly used as sleeping tablets. They are only available on prescription. They include temazepam, flunitrazepam, flurazepam, loprazolam, lormetazepam, and nitrazepam.

Other related drugs called zaleplon, zolpidem, and zopiclone are also sleeping tablets, but strictly speaking are not benzodiazepines. They are known as the Z drugs. However, they act in a similar way (they have a similar effect on the brain cells as benzodiazepines).

Antihistamines
These drugs are commonly used to treat allergies such as hay fever. However, drowsiness is a side-effect of some antihistamines, for example, promethazine. This 'side-effect' is useful in some people who have difficulty sleeping with their allergy. An antihistamine is the active ingredient of some sleeping tablets that you can buy from pharmacies without a prescription.

However, antihistamines are not as powerful as benzodiazepines or Z drugs at causing sleep. Also, they may cause a 'hang-over' effect and some drowsiness in the morning. They may also cause rebound insomnia if you take them for a long time. For these reasons, current UK guidelines do not advise the use of antihistamines to be used solely as a sleeping tablet.

Other drugs
Chlormethiazole, chloral, and barbiturates are old fashioned sleeping tablets. They are not commonly used these days as benzodiazepines and Z drugs are usually preferred

Try exercising more and doing a lot of tiring activities during the day. If that doesnt work out well then consult your doctor for some good sleeping pills.

Dont get carried away and take too many!

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

There is no need of any medicine for inadequate sleep. Start reading books which you find very boring and difficult. I am sure , once you will start reading such books, you will get peaceful sleep at night.

There are lots of good sleep medications out there, by prescribtion by your doctor.

I've tried many of them and the best one for me was Rozerem. I slept great, it eliminated my nightmares and it is non-addictive.

Some medications make you sleepy throughout the morning, so start with a low dose until you are aware of the side effects.
