It's basically a narrative history of the tribe or local group. Since there is no tradition of written language, the Maoris developed an elaborate artistic way to record their important historic events and legends. Every Marae (Place where important events are held for a community of Maoris) in NZ has its own history recorded in the wood carvings and painted panels. Especially in the Whare nui ( hall where all meetings, funerals etc are held, and also where guests sleep).
