this incident happened when our mother earth was just 800 million years old.... she was very young so that the temp even at her surface was well above normal.... the splitting of the moon was truly magical cause it formed the basis of life on earth...the thing was an asteroid hit the earth with enormous force so that chunks went flying in the air ... some of the chunks got back to the earth due it's gravity where as the remains collected over to form the moon.....
if u want how many years the answers are very accurate.....
the earth was formed from the sun .... not only the earth but the other planets too... they are as old as the solar system ... one among the oldest is the asteroids... scientists have collected some samples of the asteroids which tells that they are 4.5 billion years old. and this happens to the earth too.... but the oldest fossil that is a rock which is found on earth is only 3.8 billion years old....
the time when moon was formed the process which happened on earth is called as differentiation

Good article.

"For now, the story scientists tell about the origin of the moon goes something like this. It's 4.5 billion years ago. The very young Earth is circling the very hot sun with a bunch of other newly formed planets. Out of nowhere an object half as big as Earth comes hurtling in at several miles per second. The mega-meteor is so huge it takes half an hour to plow fully into the planet. In the heat of the collision, much of the impactor and a good portion of Earth melt and vaporize into surrounding space. Then all that atomized rock begins to recondense as dust in the primitive heavens. Within a month, a year, or a century, Earth's significant other emerges from the detritus of disaster. The two have been inseparable ever since."

Analysis of data from NASA's Lunar Prospector spacecraft has confirmed that the Moon has a small core, supporting the theory that the bulk of the Moon was ripped away from the early Earth when an object the size of Mars collided with the Earth. and it was approximately 4.6 billion years ago

Well, we aren't totally positive that the giant impact hypothesis is correct, but it does seem to fit the facts and is the best current model.

That said, according to Wikipedia:

"According to the hypothesis, 4.533 billion years (4.533 Ga) ago, 34 million years after Earth formed, a Mars-sized planetesimal hit the Earth at an oblique angle, destroying the impactor and ejecting most of the impactor and a significant portion of the Earth's felsic-rich mantle into space."

Billions of year a go, When the molten Planet earth was rotating in such a speed a small peace was thrown away and because of the gravity it was placed as moon to earth
