You normally need a licence.
Your local police station should be able to help you - I think they issue them.

Obviously, as a BT Internet user, you are based in the UK, so you can ignore all the above answers (including that of Truth Hurts - you don't go to the "Gaming Commission"). He was referring to the Gambling Commission, which regulates casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries. That would have been appropriate for the sale of a house (as he referred to, although most ventures actually fail to raise the house's reserve price).

Under the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976, you have to register your raffle with the local authority where the raffle is based. They license small lotteries, raffles etc. by societies raising money for charity, sports and other similar purposes, for non-personal or non-commercial reasons. This is where tickets are available for purchase over several days. I suspect that is what you are talking about. Depending on where you live, you will need to apply to your district council, metropolitan borough or unitary authority. Many have online forms that you can download.

If it's just a small lottery on one night, with simple numbered tickets, then don't even bother with a licence. No-one does, and there are no repercussions, although strictly speaking there is a minimum prize value for registration purposes (it used to be £25).

In the UK you need permission - which you will get if you can satisfy the Gaming Commission (application via their website)

Unless you're a registered charity you have to dream-up some easy "competition" - i.e. "tie-break" question - which everyone who buys a ticket has to answer...!

Let me tell you that's a great way to sell a house...! It's tough at first but you MUST stay the course and just keep on selling those tickets...!!! However - if you do last out - you'll make a lot of money - that's almost GUARANTEED...!!!
