your girl friend could be in what is called slow labour.

or it could be practise contractions brickston hicks.
there are many signs that labour is starting.

your girlfriend my find that her there is blood mixed with mucus this would be the plug that seals the opening to the womb and if the cervix (neck of the womb) is opening then it becomes dislodged. the neck of the womb slowly dialates until it reaches 10cm at this stage baby can be pushed out.

or your girlfriends waters may break this is when the amniotic fluid that has been surrounding baby for 9 months pours out through the cervix. like a gush of water.

or there are the contractions if you time these and they are regular then labour is starting.

i wish you all the best with the birth and new born baby

there are lots of different signs of labour. Some women's water breaks first, some women have a 'show' first (blood stained discharge) or some women can have contractions first. She will know herself when it's time to go to hospital. If her contractions are that bad that she can't talk through them then it's probably time. If you're worried at all then phone the maternity unit and tell them you're coming in. Even if you are too early, the worst they can do is send you home. Don't worry - it's a scary time but it's one of the best things in the world.

Back ache was my first sign. I didn't know this at the time, and wondered why every now and then the pain in my back got stronger. I had to go to the hospital because the baby hadn't moved for a long time and they then told me that the pains were labour pains and to go home and stick it out for as long as i could.
Good luck to both of you, it's the scariest yet most exciting time of your lives!!

If she is having dull pains regularly, they could be contractions beginning. Time how far apart they are, then call the doc with the results. There's no need to panic as long as she is at least 37 weeks along. And trust me, there is NO mistaking labor pains for anything else by the time they get far along enough to push the baby out. The pain will have brought her to the delivery room LONG before that. If this is her first, you'll have plenty of time to get there before the big event, so relax and enjoy your last few minutes of peace before the new arrival!
Good luck!

if she is due today then i wouldn't really worry about it, i do not know of one baby on this earth that has come on time. she could be having back labor or her back could just hurt from the weight on the front. call the maternity ward at the hospital or her ob/gyn's nurse and ask them. if she is having contractions don't go until they are constant for about an hour and if they change and get closer together then go as well. also if she is having back labor then it is possible that she will have bowel contractions as well. i had those with my youngest. you feel the urge to go no. 2 but when you arrive nothing. go to the doctor if she has these. hard to determine how far apart they are this way. good luck and hope this helps....holly

I had 4 kids and I started off just feeling restless, couldn't settle and then got lower niggling back ache, my waters broke and then I really started to feel 'uncomfortable' I waited at home busying myself for as long as I could humanly stand the pains then went to hospital, everbody is different, she can always call the midwife if she is unsure, but I can only say that when she is in real labour she won't need anyone to tell her, she WILL KNOW !! I remember asking my mother how I would know when I was expecting my first, she just said 'you will know' she was right!!

The first signs of labour is intense pressure from your hips into your buttocks. It sounds like your gf is in labour but you need to relax and wait until it becomes more prominent before you rush her off to hospital. She will know when labour officially starts!!! Good Luck Daddy!

i'm suffering and have been plagued by the comparable apart from diarrhoea and not "consistent" braxton hicks - yet alot extra effective than time-honored, for some weeks now. So in case you're something like me you need to nonetheless omit. yet it somewhat isn't asserting you're no longer likely to pass into labour quickly because of the fact each women, infant and labour is diverse.
