There probably several reasons why it's not called lunch anymore. First, it is a way of reducing the time workers get for their break. It used to be called "lunch hour," but I doubt anyone takes an hour anymore. The most generous break is more like half an hour. Also, with the increase in non-traditional working hours, many workers do not take their break during lunchtime, so to call it lunch would seem weird. If you have your break at 5PM, for instance, would you call it lunch?

Not all people 'break' to eat 'lunch'. The break might either be for something lighter than a traditional lunch, or most people snack during the day (while working) and 'break' for some exercise.

The term 'lunch' is not generally applicable in current business.

I call it break because I work a swing shift and by the time I take it, its too late to call it lunch. Also I dont always eat during my break, I sometimes call up my friends or walk around or socialize with others that are on their break too and so on. But Im just speaking for myself I dont know about everyone else

When I used to work at 7-Eleven if I was working a graveyard shift 10pm to 6am (11pm to 7am in most stores, except this one) and if I got hungry at 2 am do you know what they called it? Lunch! But if I worked a 2pm to 10pm and ate at 7pm do you know what the company termed it? Lunch. No matter what time it is they call it "lunch" automatically.
