"Black is the colour of my true love's hair" is a traditional Scottish song. It became well known in the Appalachian mountains of the US which had many Scots settle there.

It has been widely covered over the years including Joan Baez, Nina Simone and Sinead O'Connor. The most likely 60s hit was either by Baez or Simone.
