Dharma means Righteous action or action prescribed for an individual in performing his legitimate duty. For Eg the Dharma of a soldier is to attack the enemy and defeat him. He may kill the enemy or may get killed in the process both are good dharma for him as he has taken up being soldier as his profession.
So is the case of a butcher who kills many animals. Since it is his occupation he is doing his dharma.

In the Hindi language, it loosely means religion.
But in the Hindu philosophy, Dharma means the sacred duties one is ordained to and expected to perform - and what you actually perform is Karma. So it is that Karma should obey and be in accordance with Dharma.

Dharma is sometimes considered duty. We all have a specific dharma that we should discover and follow and as I understand it dharma cannot necessarily be judged as good or bad. Your dharma may be to be a warrior which would require you to kill and conquer in order to fufill your life's duty.
