We are moving from India where I am earning around INR 55,000 a month after paying taxes. I save around INR 25000 / month which is the equivalent of around 2000rm.
My wife will not be working. My kids are aged 5 and 1 respectively. We do not expect to spend money on liquor / cigearettes or buying a car. We would however like to travel in and around Malaysia. My daughter will go to school and we plan on employing a domesitic help at home. We will be looking for a 2 bedroom apartment near Cyberjaya (MMU campus).
Can I expect to save around 2000rm a month, as I am already saving an equivalent amount in India.

Is impossible you can save RM2000 a month with a pay cheque of RM5000 with so many commitment. EPF will take away 11% from RM5000 and tax contribution for expat is much higher. I'm not even sure there will there be any double taxation as well for you. Your wife needs to work maybe in an admin position and get maybe around RM2000 a month. If your kids are not going for any smart school/ private school I guess you can save up more money. Food in Cyberjaya is expensive unless you do your own cooking. Minimum spending on entertainment of course. Holiday around Malaysia is not cheap either. Check out the "Cuti2 Malaysia" vacation plans with your travel agency for discounts. Goodluck and take care!

I think you better work out what your net take home pay is, after deducting income tax, and find out if you are required to contribute Employee's Pension Fund(normally 11%) and also, SOCSO(National Health Insurance)?

You probably have slightly over 4k, take away accomodation(500), maid(500), food & other household goods(1500), transport(?)

I really don't think you can save 2k a month.

Schooling for your children won't be too bad since they're quite young, and besides, the government does subsidize government schools immensely. A maid, bills, rent.. I think rm2000 a month is achievable. Just no extravagances please :) the bus would be the cheapest way around (although not too enjoyable) and carrefoure/tesco provide good value for money for almost anything
