Because it is a lie that works. It worked to get us into the war and it is still working regarding the Iraq invasion (although weakening as more people accept the truth) to keep us there.
It's real strength is the with the whole bogus 'war on terror' fantasy that neocons and the military-industrial complex have created for their own personal benefit.
Every successful effort against terrorists has come through 'police-work', including Britain's recent intervention of the plan to blow up multiple airplanes.
A British citizen of Arab heritage approached authorities more than a year ago with information that had come to his attention.
Based on what they were told by this informant, they were able to infiltrate the responsible group.
It had nothing to do with military tactics or wiretapping (as conservatives are saying in order to justify Bush's continuing destruction of the US Constitution).

Carla –
The 9/11 report and the Congressional report on pre-war intelligence both state:
• Hussein did not provide training camps to terrorists
• there was no connection between Iraq and OBL, AQ, or any terrorist organization
• there were NO terrorists in Iraq before Bush invaded
• Hussein hated AQ before we did
• Hussein did not hide al-Zargawi - he tried to have him arrested

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Americans are far from alone in the world, but from the perspective of many young Americans, we might as well be. Most young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 demonstrate a limited understanding of the world, and they place insufficient importance on the basic geographic skills that might enhance their knowledge.
Young Americans answer about half (54 percent) of all the survey questions correctly. But by and large, majorities of young adults fail at a range of questions testing their basic geographic literacy.
Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.
6 in 10 young Americans don't speak a foreign language fluently.
20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia. (It's the largest country in Africa.)
48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim. (It's Hindu—by a landslide.)
Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.
These results suggest that young people in the United States—the most recent graduates of our educational system—are unprepared for an increasingly global future. Far too many lack even the most basic skills for navigating the international economy or understanding the relationships among people and places that provide critical context for world events.
About the Survey
The findings presented are the results of a face-to-face survey conducted from December 17, 2005, to January 20, 2006, by Roper Public Affairs and Media, a part of GfK NOP. .
This study is the latest in a series of surveys commissioned by the National Geographic Society.
Some thirty million adults in the U.S. do not have the skills to perform even the most basic tasks such as adding numbers on a bank slip, identifying a place on a map, or reading directions for taking a medication. Eleven million Americans are totally illiterate in English.
Only twenty-nine percent of Americans have basic reading and computing skills. One out of every twenty Americans lacks the ability to understand what is going on in the world or to develop an informed opinion for voting.

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace in a continual state of alarm (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing them with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

there is not any data by way of fact there became no link. President Bush had closer ties to bin weighted down than Hussein had. remember while he made preparations for the bin weighted down family individuals to bypass away the USA? It became the only plane allowed to fly...in case you remember, each and every of the planes have been grounded for DAYS after the attack...however the bin Ladens have been given out. The Bush family individuals has continuously been close to not purely the bin weighted down family individuals yet different Saudi tyrants and royalty.

Part of the reason is that it holds implications that fully vindicate the actions of the United States government and military. Flag waving is a sport that never really goes out of fashion. Part of the reason too is that some people are highly resistant to new information. Remember that perhaps over two million Americans believe Elvis is still alive. Scary, but true.

because it suited the Bush family's plan to avenge a plot on the life of Bush senior a year after the Gulf War. That's the main reason.... Oh, and Afghanistan doesn't have oil, apparently.

Ask George Bush. He (apparently) never said there was a link between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. All he said was there was a link between Terrorism and al-Qaeda, and a link between Saddam Hussein and Terrorism. Therefore, in that way, they were linked. It would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

Like those anti american posts dont you?Try asking the soldiers who found Al Queda training camps around Bagdad, but we went to war with Iraq because Sadam failed to abide by the UN Resolution and the majority of Congress and Senate voted on going into Iraq.

Because...Abdul Rahman Yasin held and Iraqi passport after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. After skipping bail in New Jersey as one of the most wanted men in U.S. history, he made it through Jordan to Bagdad in a matter of hours.
Zarqawi is another excellent example of Saddam's terrorist ties. Millions of Iraqis can tell you that, like the Iron Curtain, it was extremely difficult to enter or leave Iraq's borders. So how did this man, dubbed by bin Ladan as al-Quaida's "Prince of Iraq," end up there? In order to believe that Saddam was unaware of his presence, you would have to believe:
1. A low-level Iraqi official decided to admit a much-hunted Jordanian - a refugee from the invasion of Afghanistan, AFTER 9/11/01 - when even the most conservative forces in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were keeping their distance from such people and were even assisting in rounding them up.
2. That this newly admitted immigrant felt that the most pressing need of the holy war was the assissination of Kurdish leaders opposed to the rule of Saddam Hussein.
3. That a recently arrived Jordanian, in a totally controlled police state, was so enterprising as to swiftly put himself in possession of maps, city diagrams, large sums of cash, and a group of heavily armed fighters hitherto named after the Iraqi dictator himself: the Fedayeen Saddam.
Also, look at what was believed, at that time, by our intelligence sources about Saddam's weapons building. There was corroborating intelligence with Saudi Arabia, the U.K., Russia, Jordan, Israel, Czech and others. Given the foregoing and Saddam's offer to pay families of Palestinian suicide bombers $25,000 per episode, it seems probable that he would outsource his dirty work to al-Quaida.
Remember that following 9/11, Shamil Basayev and the Chechen forces wrought a lot of havoc in Russia. There was, and still is, a general fear that terrorist cells will be the new predominant strategy in war.
The tone of your question leads me to believe that you will shoot down every point I made. Fine, you're welcome to disagree; however, I think Saddam was perceived as a valid threat.
