Hi, sometimes I'm lazy and I go to bed with the concealer and foundation that I put on in the morning still on, or what remains of it. Now, intuitively I feel that this is bad for my skin from an aging point of view, but why would that be? My question is twofold: how bad is this for my skin quality and why?

Its not harmful to leave your make up on over night once in a while. But ideally you should remove it every night, even if you are tired or can't be bothered. Night time is the best time for all your skin and cell renewal and I always tell clients to have a good skin care routine before you so to bed so that the skin can maximise the nutrients while you sleep.
If you don’t remove makeup before bed, it could clog up pores and oil glands. When the make up becomes impacted in pores, it can make them appear larger which is a part of aging! Once your collagen levels decline, the pore does not snap back as easily once it has been enlarged. It is best to break this habit sooner rather than later. Additionally, leaving makeup on the face could lead to inflammation, which can lead to inflamation and spots.
If you follow a good bed time skin routine, its natural healing powers will be maximized during the night, and it will stay in better condition for a longer period of time.
Dont get me wrong, I use those all in one cleasing cloths, but have you ever wiped your face with a tissue afterwards, there is always some make up left over, so I always follow with a mild cleanser and night cream (depending on your age). As I said NIGHT TIME is when the skin absorbs all the goodnedd you have put into it. Hope this helps

When you're sleeping at night, the whole body (including you skin) repairs on it's own from the damages you got during the day. Even if you have no makeup on and stayed at home all day, there's still damages to your skin. (From dust, bacterial, etc.) So when your skin is repairing at night, it works the makeup that you left on your skin to it's deeper layer which making your skin dirtier, the dirt will be harder to remove day after day, thus aging will begin sooner because it doesn't get proper nutrients. Also a lot of makeup has a lot of minerals int it. But if you remove it and put a night cream on, your skin will penetrate the cream which prolongs aging. You don't necessarily need to put on an anti-aging night cream but leaving your makeup on certainly it's not good for you.

I believe that our skin needs a break during the night, a "breather" if you will. Leaving it on can't be good for it. Think about nails that are always covered. They eventually turn yellow, an indicator that they need a break too. Skin may not turn yellow, but it can't be as vibrant if it's clogged all the time.

It is bad for your skin in the aging sense. The make-up clogs your pores and your skin need time to breathe. However, lotion is supposed to be a good thing, at night. So, I obviously don't understand something, since, I am confused.

There are many chemicals in make-up that are harmful to the skin. therefore, leaving make-up on overnight is extending the length of time that your skin is exposed to these chemicals. Natural, hypo-allergenic, etc. types of make-up might be better to leave on.

I sleep with my make-up on sometimes too. It is bad because it clogs up your pores and that can cause break outs.
