called cracking your knuckles. old wives tale about it giving arthritis. at most it will make your joints swell some but nothing to stop movement.
the sound you hear is a release of air bubbles that have gotten caught in the joint. you feel better afterwards cause the strain is off of the joint.
people who use their hands alot are more prone to these air bubbles. they are caused by much motion.
I personally have cracked mine for the past 27 yrs and I am a web programmer...type around 132 wpm. I have my hands tested by an expert every 2 yrs and xray'd. to date not one problem or issue and doc agrees...old wives tale.

Studies have shown that there's no evidence of increased arthritis in knuckle-poppers, but there can be other negative effects, including soft tissue damage to the joint capsule and a decrease in grip strength. This is due to repeated stretching of the ligaments around the joint.
There's an interesting explanation of what causes the popping at this site: http://science.howstuffworks.com/question437.htm

This appears like a pores and skin difficulty extremely than an allergy. My suggestion different than for seeing the dermatologist may be to apply a heavy hand moisturizer at bedtime and placed on cotton gloves over the moisturizer mutually as you sleep. this might provide your hands a while to heal. i might use a petrol based moisturizer and skinny cotton gloves. additionally call the dermatologist and get on a cancellation checklist so as which you would be able to get in quicker.

I've been doing it for years and all my fingers are still there, I think that it's just a myth put out by the people that can't stand to hear it.

Nope! No arthritis!
My chiropractor said you can do it all you want... and I have for 56 years now, and I have NO problems!
Our parents used to say it would give us big knuckles when we grew up, or we'd get arthritis... but that was just because they couldn't stand the noise!

Yes, it does cause arthritis later in life. It will also make your knuckles much larger.
Bad habbit, I'd recommend you don't do it anymore.
