answer for a crossword begins with se???s?s. i got the word selfists, which means selfish. from a couple of dictionary's. have tried one across they didn't come up with anything. the clues down to the word are imitated, which i got apes. then degrade i got debase. across above isnparcels which i got packages. next clue down is kidnap victims which i put hostages and at end the clue is sightseers and i put tourists. all giving me the se???s?s. selfists means selfish, not sure if it is the right answer for holds in contempt?. any more clues anyone please.

Try "aped" instead of "apes." Since the clue is in the past tense, the word should also be past tense. Looks like Mary's answer would be correct if you use aped.

It does look like one letter is wrong.. try 'despises'
