They never discovered it since the planet earth was meant to be the computer which was meant to calculate the ultimate question but it was blown up during its cycle. At the end of the movie, the 2 mice who were meant to become part of the earth's operational matrix in order to determine the ultimate question were killed by Arthur Dent when the world was re-created. Therefore the question was never determined & therefore there was no answer.
But the answer to life, the universe & everything was 42.
