Im 18. Im currently compleating yr 12 and want to train to be a vet assistant or vet nurse. I cannot go to university straight after my HSC however i have applied to do an animal studies course at tafe and on the compleation of that i wish to apply for the veterinary nursing course. I have also applied for any trainee ship or work experience opportunitys in 13 local vets of where i wish to travel to for work. I have some experience in handeling and caring for animals as i have done work experience at a local animal park and i care for native injured or orphaned animals on occasions when my friend who is a wildlife rehabilitator has to be away from them. If there is anything else i should do that any one thinks will be helpful please feel free to let me know. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!

Sounds like you've done a lot already and have plenty of experience in animal care. At your age I don't think it would be difficult in getting in some volunteer work at a vet practice, so you could ask at your local vets for some experience. Good luck with it.

I got my start when I was about your age. I just submitted my resume to a bunch of vet hospitals and I got hired on at one. They taught me so much there from restraining animals, giving vaccines, taking TPR, and drawing blood. I wanted to branch out a bit so I got another job at another vet clinic and I pretty much did it all. Now I have so much experience I am certainly making a lot of money.
My advice for you is to get your foot in the door and you will learn everything as you go! Good Luck.

Start volunteering at your local SPCA, animal shelter, or rescue group ... you will get great experience and may make some great contacts.
