Information exchange.
That is frankly the only reason. The type of information can be many different things like:
Orders.
Feedback.
Brainstorming.
Convince the 'other'.
etc.
The speed of the feedback and the directness of it, is a very important reason to pick a meeting over, say a mailing or other form of communication.

Because...
In meetings, you can discuss your vision, ur mission, ur goals, and ur strategies.
Specifically speaking... projects, what u intend to achieve and how ur going to do it with the help of who would you be able to do it.
Meetings may have different objectives but basically, it is where members and officers "meet" to have their ideas in line. Sometimes, it could be dreadful or boring but otherwise it could be exciting and energizing. So it could be up to the moderator how he'd make it.
Imagine if the org/company/ group doesn't have any meeting. It would imply that only one person's decisions count, wouldn't it?
Pardon the novel.:)
