MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE

i am assuming you are not living in the snow belt, so I'll toss a couple unusual suggestions for the small areas you spoke of...

unusual...
creeping lily turf
epimedium pinnatum
festuca glauce
zoysia tenuifolia
tyme (some)
dead nettle

just a few ideas. contact your local extension office and speak with a local MASTER GARDENER who will advise you on plants for your own area.

My last of the night,,,and since you didn't state any living organisms, I suggest RUBBER MULCH,,,unless of course you want plant life. IT even comes in colors.

Crushed Sea shells, lava rock, Japanese, Black river rock.

If your desire is plant related, and Ground cover is something you are having a difficult time with,,,IE: Grass,,, there are many things you can plant. Not knowing where you are, or how much sun actually falls on the area, my first suggestion would be any Conifer,,,such as Juniper. Portulacas (SP) also spread,, often out of control once etablished. You also don't state 'mowing' issues, or the aesthetics you're trying to achieve.
