I mix red pepper sauce with a little water and spray it on the pumpkins. I also have put a fake cat near the pumpkins and that worked too!

You have a couple options. Mix a thin flour and water mixture to form paste - about the same consistency as paint. Make about 2 cups of that. Mix in 1/2 cup of fresh ground Cayenne Pepper. Spray or brush onto the pumpkins.

Or, if they're already orange, cut the pumpkins, bring them inside and spray them with shellac or polyurethane to seal them. Keep them in a cool, dark location. Pumpkins keep for a very long time. We harvested some in July and they're still very firm.

Try sprinkling cayenne pepper around them. Or get the scent of their natural predators from a trapper's supply house and put a little around on the graound. You will have to reapply either of these after a rain.Predators would be fox, wolf, or coyote.

Scatter moth balls around them. Animals hate the smell. Wear gloves when handling and keep small children away, moth balls are poisonous. Best of luck.
