North Korea wants several things. First to show that they can be a mouse that roared....if they fire a nuclear weapon at the US and we retaliate...we opened the door to World War III as there is a mutual defense treaty with China, and China has a mutual defense treaty with Russia....so they can shake and rattle swords and there is little that we can do without getting to a big mess. Second, they want economic sanctions removed so that they can obtain goods from other countries that the US and others have deprived them of...China does trade with North Korea...mostly for foods, and medicines, and has even supplied some technical support for industry but it isn't enough. The economy of North Korea is poor and Kim has a megalomaniacal mind and is trying to squeeze blood from stone. Just yesterday, he badgered his military commanders into accepting the idea of the nuclear test...they kowtowed to him...but in that dictatorship (yes, supposedly communistic but truly a dictatorship...and has been one since his father Kim Il Jung began it 40 years ago) a sane man would not defy him. Third, NK wants to be developed by the investments and loans of other countries....President Clinton was moderately successful at working things out...but we changed Presidents and things went to hell. All the nonsense about Japan warning North Korea is rhetoric...the one with the muscle to do the job is China...not the US....let the problem be solved or China can crush them...with an army of 300,000,000 men. North Korea has been preparing for an invasion by the US for several years now and has built large underground complexes...and remember that the half million American troops in Vietnam were defeat by guerillas and the infamous tunnels of Cu Chi. We may have the might but do we have the resolve or will it be deja vu all over again?

North Korea wants to not be attacked by the United States. Aside from that, the leader wants to hang onto power, just like any other dictator.
It shouldn't cost us one red cent, unless Bush decides to get us involved in another war. However, I think he'll be plenty busy starting a war with Iran first, so he won't have time to spare for North Korea any time soon.

North Korea is basically a third world country with a dictator, nukes, a military, and a bunch of poor farmers and peasants. They want what their leader wants. Power. Acknowledgement. Kinda going about acquiring it the wrong way though.

it is the prerogative of every country to have nukes. in this unipolar world, where the USA is playing the role of super police, north Korea, to safe guard it tested nuclear so that it can prevent attacks from the enemy countries and hegemonic and imperialist countries. had Iraq were in possession of nukes, the USA would not have invaded it. if Lebanon were in possession of the nukes, Israel would not have attacked it.now israel, iran would follow north korea

Bush has started a nuclear race and every nation in the world is running to figure out how to build one - so they can keep Bush the mad man that he is from invading their country.
Because of Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq based on lies and the US using depleted Uranium shell for their bombs and bullets causing radiation poisoning and birth defects and making thousands of acres unusable for crops : every nation in the world is trying to get a nuclear weapon so as to keep the mad man (BUSH) out .
It does not help that the world knows Iran is next ..........
