I'd say a freshwater fish is a first consideration for the type of fish to buy. Now, you should think more about small goldfish not those large ones or else you know that your money will basically go to waste because the fish will end up dieing pretty quickly. Goldfish at my Walmart cost only about 28 cents but wherever you live it may cost more or maybe less. You shouldn't start out with buying a fantail just because it's pretty. For any type of freshwater fish, you should buy Tetrafin goldfish flakes, they say goldfish but I'm pretty sure that it can be feed to other freshwater fish because I've tryed it before.

You should start with goldfish. Although they won't last long, it's the easiest to take care of. If you have a pond, it would be the best but if you have a tank, you may want a 2 gallon tank, but if you have a bowl, I'm telling you, doesn't matter what type of fish, they'll die, especially guppies(betta's may last longer than other fish). Also remember that you should go in this order
(1)Coldwater
(2)Freshwater
(3)Saltwater
(4)Tropical

Make sure you have the highest water quality
possible. This would mean 0 ppm of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates; all of which you can test using a test kit or by having your local pet store test them for you. Don't add any more fish until you've had your water tested. If any of these levels are too high, you should do an immediate 25% water change. If your levels of ammonia are high, three 25% water changes over the course of a week may help.
In the future, you should perform a 25% water change every two weeks. This will help to control levels of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. The water changes will reduce any problems with water quality and help the fish combat parasites plus reduce any harmful bacteria.
In order to maintain low levels of these toxins, you should also make sure not to overfeed your fish or overstock your tank.
Overfeeding of your fish can increase these levels in the water as the uneaten food is allowed to decompose. At each feeding you should feed no more than what your fish can eat in ONE minute, while allowing a minimum amount of food to fall to the gravel.
Proper filtration and aeration are other things you may want to
consider.Make sure the filter is working properly and that the water is well oxygenated. Temperature is also important. Tropical fish prefer a temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

I personally love the 5 bettas I have had. As for price, it doesn't get much better- it shouldn't cost you more than $5 for a male, and there is a wide variety in almost every colour. I haven't had any other kinds of fish for quite some time, but as far as fish go, they seem to be clean. I clean the bowl once a week, but they are okay to go for 2 every once and a while. It's not a big deal though because the bowl only holds one gallon, doesn't need any special filters, and the water comes straight from the tap. All I need to add are my rocks, plants, and some formula that makes the water okay for the fish to be in. They live for 2-3 years, but some people have told me that there's have lived upwards of 5 years. As for appearance, they are striking fish. They have beautiful fins, come in a vast array of colours, and look good anywhere you put them. Best of luck with your decision!

First off this is such a coincidence I have been searching the internet for animal questions I could help with. I started out with dogs like teacup yorkshire terriers, then I had a cat, then a bird, then just a dog,now i have a dog and 2 parakeets. Considering you want a pet easy to handle fish are out the window and so are certain breeds of cats. If your mom said no to another rabbit rodents are out the window too. Try getting hand raised parakeet or cockatial. You might also try a tecup yorkie they live forever there awsome easy to handle but expensive. Hope I helped and next time post any animal allergies you or your family have.

Depends on what you want, what you like, how much space you have available, and how much care/dedication you're willing to put into it.

Don't want to do large weekly water changes, get a betta in a small tank.

Want a large fish in your front hallway that bites you and makes you bleed whenever you try to clean his water but looks really cool and gets lots of attention from people?- Get a Red Devil.

Try a Betta, they are fairly clean, beautiful, and inexpensive. I have gold fish, I love them a lot, but they get really expensive. I pay for water testing kits, filtration cartridges, light bulbs, varied foods, medications, etc. For a Betta all you need is a bowl, and non tap water, and food (I got Betta food for 99 cents and it's still not finished after 3 months).
