I have never gotten what it said out of my head... it was very accurate about two things that there was no way I knew at the time (and things that were somewhat unlikely as well)... Now, this year, something s supposed to happen to me... and given the fact I live in a new city for school...it sort of all makes sense - but I swear I am otherwise very rational. I don't even believe in karma, fate, religion, etc... but this freaking Ouija board??

It predicted where i'd go to college... a school that is hard to get into - where my grades & scores were close to their bottom third.... then, 6 years later i am in a new city... how could it have predicted this all in 1995??? It predicted where my friend would go to college too.

It's called the ideomotor effect.

The ideomotor effect is a psychological phenomenon wherein a subject makes motions unconsciously, especially while attributing the motion to a paranormal or supernatural force in which he/she believes. Unexplained phenomena such as automatic writing, dowsing, facilitated communication, and Ouija boards can be attributed to the ideomotor effect. The effect is extremely powerful and many subjects cannot be convinced that their actions are originating solely in their own minds.

The term was first used in a paper discussing the means through which the Ouija board produced its results, by William Benjamin Carpenter in 1852. In the paper, Carpenter explained his theory that muscular movement can be independent of conscious desires or emotions.

Scientific tests by American psychologist William James, French chemist Michel Chevreul, English scientist Michael Faraday, and American psychologist Ray Hyman have demonstrated that many phenomena attributed to spiritual or paranormal forces, or to mysterious "energies," are actually due to ideomotor action. Furthermore, these tests demonstrate that "honest, intelligent people can unconsciously engage in muscular activity that is consistent with their expectations" (Hyman 1999).[1] They also show that suggestions that can guide behavior can be given by subtle clues (Hyman 1977)[citation needed].

Have you ever heard the term "self fulfilling prophecy"? You or a friend suggested a scenario or set of events with the ouija board, and subconsciously you have fulfilled the prophecy over the years. It's more pshychological than it is metaphysical, trust me.

I believe in them. My grandma, yes, my grandma bought one for me and my brother when we were younger. My mother wanted to take it to the dump and eventually she did. But they can do some freaky stuff, I don't know if I would play with one now.

It's just a neurosis... we all have our own little quirks and this is one of yours. Just laugh it off. It's nonsense.

You pushed a little do-hickey around with your fingers and spelled out your worst fears and your best hopes... no biggie you aren't bound to make them come true.
