Your friend's migration officer appears to be misinformed or miseducated. The term 'recession' refers to two or more consecutive periods of negative growth, Australia has not, in recent times, had one. The migration officer may in fact (incorrectly) be referring to the increases in interest rates in Australia, these are caused because of our GROWTH not a recession, and these have little effect on migrants.
As to whether there are jobs for your friend, it depends on what skills she has. Australia is in the midst of a 'skills shortage' where there are a lack of skilled employees - especially in trades such as the automotive repair and maintenance industry. However, due to our workplace laws, it would not be advisable if your friend has neither a university degree or is a qualified tradesperson.

What a load of crap!!! I'm from Australia and trust me we are definately not in economic recession. Unfortunately the migration officer has obtained her information incorrectly as this is not the case. Australia has a very strong economy, in fact, the strongest it has been for sometime and probably one of the better economies going around in the world!! The job market has never been stronger, in fact Australia has so many jobs that we can't keep up. Tell your friend to see another migration officer as this one obviously has the wrong information.

Drought - definitely! Recession - no!

Australia is currently experiencing the lowest unemployment statistics for 30 years. However, your friend will find it easier to obtain work in Australia (and also to migrate) if:

1). She is a skilled migrant - either a trade or an in-demand profession

2) she speaks good, clear, un-heavily accented English. This is a barrier to many migrants in Australia not obtaining work. If their English is too heavily accented, then employers will usally not even interview you.

No! And what a lot of crap! I'm Aussie and haven't heard of a recession. We have been in a drought situation [meaning lack of rain] this year not economic recession. Lot's of good jobs available to good workers here in all types of fields.
