It is very essential to have interest in the topic to understand anything. Second pre-requisit to understand anything is the topic's basic detail and information. The third thing needed is the environment (for e.g. a very poor person in afghanistan might not understand what "Nano Science" or a "Microchip" is? because the environment and society he lives in - does not use it in their day-today lives. In same way if you ask Yahoo's CEO how to plant "poppy seeds" which is produced in afghanistan in large scale, he wouldnt know or he wouldnt understand because of above reasons - probably lack of interest in knowin it or pre-requisit or even the environment / culture / society he/she lives in).

Another very important thing is literacy but it is not always essential. My Grand-Mum used to give me home medicine when I was having bad temprature or while I was caughing - she cured me faster then my doctor - and scientifically. But she was not formally educated. Hence literacy is not very essential to understand anything - but above factors are.

First, you must be 'open minded'- there are an awful lot of ideas & opinions in the world. You must cultivate the ability to think for yourself (not just follow the opinions of the crowd or even your best friend). Only then will you be able to seriously ponder what others might say or do & not think that it's totally 'lame'. You'll be able to see that there might be a point to what's being said or done, even if it seems silly. Make up your own mind.
Remember- Einstein flunked math & most geniuses are considered nuts. It's very important in life to think for yourself and form your own opinions & beliefs.
