When people have pet porcupines how do they not get poked when they pick them up?

They would have to wear heavy duty gloves to not get stabbed. I used to work in a zoo and we had a hedgehog which is similar to a porcupine. I could pet it, but picking it up I had to put on gloves or else it would hurt.

i think they clip the ends of the spikes :)
