can someone give me a background information on UBC academically? socially? i know that the campus is unbelievably gorgeous but I really have no idea how the programs are, especially in the medical and business department.

I love the school. Socially, everyone is really friendly and works incredibly hard to get their absolute best. There are so many exchange students from all over the world and Canada, so there's always someone new to meet. And the professors know their stuff, and the faculties are strong.

I'm currently in the engineering faculty, and I've never seen so much strength and confidence within any other faculty.

I love it here. And it helps a lot more to know that my university is one of the top 40 around the world. (As so the school says on its website.)

There's a lot of squirrels around here too.

GO THUNDERBIRDS! (Slightly childish sounding, no?)

1. Do you recognize that Medicine is a post-degree program and first you'll need an undergraduate degree? Regardless, Business and Medicine are two of the most competitive programs at UBC so you'll need a super-high GPA/entering average, and you'll need to keep your marks up once you're in the program. UBC is strong for both Business and Medicine.

2. I personally didn't like UBC and chose not to go there because the campus is SOOOO far from the city center. It's beautiful but VERY isolated, and public transportation isn't very good from about 10 pm to 7 am. The traditional dorms are huge so you'll meet lots of people, and there's a bit of a Greek scene as well, which isn't so common at Canadian universities. A lot of my friends who are big on partying and who are perfectly happy staying on campus for two or three weeks at a time love UBC. I chose the University of Calgary, because their Business program is really strong and it's easy to get from the university to shopping, downtown, restaurants, workplaces, etc. It's a big less party-oriented though, probably because it's so easy to go off-campus to all the great clubs and bars in the city.
