Starboard is the nautical term that refers to the right side of a vessel as perceived by a person on board the ship and facing the bow. The starboard side of a vessel is indicated with a GREEN navigation light at night. The starboard side of most naval vessels the world over is designated the 'senior' side.
A ship has two sidelights. A GREEN light on the ship's starboard side and a red light on the port side each showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 112.5 degrees and fixed to show the light from right ahead to 22.5 degrees (2 points) abaft the beam on its respective side.

GREEN
If to starboard red appears
it is your duty to keep clear
to act as judgement says is proper
turn port or starboard, go astern or stop her
but if to port of you is seen
a vessels starboard light of green
then theres not so much for you to do
as green to port keeps clear of you.
A little poem i learned more years ago than i care to remember that jumped into my head when i read you question.

And blue on the bottom. You don't wanna see that one!
(Answering a question in another answer)
The colors are so that you tell which way vessel is the facing, moving, and which side - you - or the other boat are on.
