I think you would do well to visit these:
1.Jacksonville, FL
2. Savannah, GA
3. New York City, NY
4. Salt Lake City, UT
5. San Antonio, TX
6. Tampa, FL
7. Atlanta, GA
8. Chicago, IL
9. Washington, D.C.
10. Albuquerque, NM
Keep in mind that the real suprises are found in the small towns and rural areas of America. Don't miss Louisiana's "Cajun Country" or the Four Corners Region, so called because at one point you can stand in four states (UT, AZ, NM, and CO) at once.

I would highly recommend the Pacific North West. Any of either San Fransisco, Portland or Seattle. I haven't been to SF, but heard nice things. Also that it is expensive. Portland is a really cool smaller city with a lot of great attractions and relatively cheap. Unfortunately the job market is a bit saturated for recent grads. Seattle is also a really cool city with a great culture. I don't know how it compares to NYC but it struck me as a bit expensive there. In Ballard (which is a trendy neighborhood now) a cheap studio goes around $800. Good luck.

I suggest that you study geography at Microsoft Encarta for Kids. It might help you decide on what cities to go to!
I had studied the 50 states through it and with the help of Yahoo travel since it has slides to show of the places. There are games as to the famous spots in US. It is fun!
I had only been to California and Nevada. San Diego is a nice place. Once there, try going to the last American exit. LA is heavy traffic! San Francisco is a lovely city! I had been also to the Contra costa county near San Francisco
( Concord, Pittsburgh, Oakland, La Fayette) ! I had been to the Ventura County also ( Simi Valley, Camarillo, Oxnard). to the grape vineyards of Sonoma! I had been to the really hot place of El Centro, California too. Orange Country has its own beauty too. California alone is already a big State. I hadnt heard of a Californean who had been to the whole of California yet.
Nevada has the best hotels in America. Each hotel has its own unique features. Try going to each place.

New York City, of course, is a must for culture.
San Francisco is energetic and funky, and it has awesome neighboring cities like Oakland and Berkeley.
