John Edwards was the adopted son of Isaiah and Grace. He and Mary were engaged before he went off to college in one episode. In the next, Charles Ingalls takes a trip there for a Grange meeting and takes Mary with him. Charles catches John with another woman and John admits that he doesn't love Mary anymore. Although quite sad on the train ride home, Mary's spirits perk up quite a bit when a young man sits in front of her and her pa and offers them a sandwich.

No Mary Ingalls was never going to marry John Edwards. He was a close friend of the family and like an uncle to them.

Mary Ingalls marries Adam (can't remember last name...) in the TV show. They met when Mary went to school for the blind--he was a teacher there. Mary and John Edwards broke up, I think it was because she went blind and he couldn't handle it.

In the real family, Mary did go blind but she never married.
