It's about even - but it could be better to build your own desktop as you have COMPLETE control over the components that go in the system.
As for laptops, you'd be foolish to buy any laptop with less than a 3 year warranty. And I don't know any place that offers 3 year warranties on "build your own laptops" - this place is the only place I know of where you CAN build your own laptop:
http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Store_Code=GPS&Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=Notebook
But again, for laptops, buy a brand name and get the warranty.

If you want more bang for your buck, go with the desktop. Desktops are easily upgraded while laptops are not.
Desktop
Pros:
-Components are easy to upgrade
-More bang for your buck
-The fastest desktop will beat the fastest laptop
-Heat isn't a huge issue
-You don't have to buy expensive batteries
Cons:
-Stationary
-Requires more space
Laptop
Pros:
-Mobility
-Just as fast as a desktop
-Takes up less space
-If there's a storm or if the power is out you can still use it
Cons:
-Usually slower than similarly priced desktops
-Desktops offer better gaming
-Limited upgrading options
-Breakable
Basically if you travel a lot, get a laptop. If you don't need the mobility, then the desktop is the way to go. Also if you're on a budget then get a desktop.

I've done neither, but I believe that building a laptop is only for the very advanced computer boffin.
Building a PC desktop on the other hand appears to be relatively easy and is simply a case of piecing a fairly small number of components together.
Quite good since, if you tell people you 'build' computers, they assume you're some kind of computer genius!

PC Desktop is a suitable choice since you can buy each part separately. It depends on the specification of the PC you would like it to be, if you want it good - running fast, you might put more budgets.
Laptop, well, i would not recommend to build it.

Hi I would build a desktop as it is easier to upgrade, one site that you may like is
www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/index.htm
This is where I bought my tower and contents, and I have no complaints. If you live close by you can go to the business park and buy over the counter, and all parts have individual guarantees.
laptops date much more quickly and are not as upgradable as desktops.
Happy building x

Laptops are for mobility.
Laptops cannot be upgraded.
This should make your decision easier.
