If it's cracking like you say, it was put on to thick. You are better off to scrape it off and start again putting thin layers at a time on. Takes more time but it's the way to do it.

Yes it was too thick, may be your first coat wasn't dry all of the way any way that is right you will have to take it down because to try to fix it sound like a easy thing to do but you wouldn't believe how hard it is, I tried tons of times and it still looked like crap because by the time you fix enough to get rid if the cracks then the plaster is thick it's self and looks like crap.

Applied too heavily, too dry, too wet, drying too rapidly, initially, shrinkage in drying, sub surface application (first coat) application issues.
