what about the winter or summertime? how would you eat?
(dont say stay with friends or family,or in your car)

I think I would go to the 24 hour places at night, like wal-mart.
or maybe just walk in the hospital and find a hiding place to sleep, that way I would be safe, out of the weather and could clean up in a bathroom. I could pretend to shop at air conditioned places in the hot part of summer. go to the soup kitchens,if any around, to eat, maybe collect cans or bottles for change to buy food.

if I were to end up homeless, I would spend my day and my night looking for a job....

I was down on my luck in 2002...I got out of the military b/c I was promised a job...I moved 1500 miles, got an apartment that cost $1000/month and the job didnt come through....I couldnt find a job for about 2 months that I wanted so I started to really scratch for money, barely making my rent...I took the next job that came up, only about $20,000 a year, no benefits, made my way..eventually I got back on my feet...no I own a house, 2 cars, and make about 4 times that

anyone can get down on their luck and come close to losing everything, but you have to suck it up and do what you have to

Lots of people in Portland are under bridges, there is some seclusion and weather protection and a sense of a homeless community too. If you are homeless for a long time, your appearance and smell might not make Wal-Mart an option for too long. Many homeless I see in Portland have their bedrolls and camping gear on their back. Parks are also options, but security guards patrol some of them. I've seen many people curled up in front of abandoned stores, the alcove area in front of stores can be somewhat protective.

It also might be easy to assume that you should just move to somewhere better, but that usually requires money. Even a bus or train ride is expensive, and I see some homeless people with signs asking for money for a train ride out of Portland.

I liked all your answers . i will know what to do should i become homeless. Would you believe in this little town in Ky there are no homeless. We provide public housing assistance and foodstamp cards for food. of course there are always those that cant manage so there are food banks for those. The Churches in our area are generous.

I hope it never happens but I suspect I would travel south to Miami or the Keys since being homeless during the winter would likely freeze by ***** off.
