They were launched September 5, 1977 and August 20, 1977. The gold disk is a record album containing the "sounds of Earth." This disk is not infamous.

The infamous item is a plaque engraved with a nude man and woman (among other things), which riled religious nuts who criticized NASA for sending "pornography" into space. The plaque went into space with Pioneer 10, which is a different space probe.
