Just curious as to who lets young kids watch tv. And how many minutes/hours a day??

It negatively affects their brain development...

I agree that it depends on what they are watching and how often, but children need so much hands on from us adults. And when they are playing while watching tv, or you are watching tv with them it is different!

I let mine watch tv after she was 1. I would sit there with her and sing and act out the show. Usually uld watch one 20 min show before afternoon nap then one after dinner. I think she learned a lot from it.

Both my children started watching Teletubbies or Cartoons at about 1 to 2 years of age. Probably for about 1 to 2 hours a day, considering how much I needed done. My son is in 4th grade, has always been on the AB honor roll, scores in the commended range on TAKS tests and is an advanced reading class. My daugher is 2 and a half, and everyone, even people with kids, comment on how smart and talkative she is. It's not the tv, that affects the kids, it's the parenting.

Personally, I dont think its a good idea. I don't have kids or anything, but its pretty much a common sense issue. There are some special programs though, for babies...like on dish network, they have this program just for babies to help them learn, and they also have this video game thing thats made for babies and toddlers. I think those are the best thing to let them watch right now even though im still pretty skeptical about letting babies watch tv.

Do you know for sure it negatively affects their brain development? Are you a doctor? A neurologist? I have a VERY bright four year old. He has a very large vocabulary, can read and write most small words. He has been watching TV since before he was two. I think as long as you monitor what and when your children watch T.V. and do not use it as a baby sitter you are okay.

My son will be 2 on the 17th and he loves watching TV, he likes Bear in the Big blue house and Winnie the Pooh but he has learned so much from these programs. He speaks so good learn from these programs. I don't feel there is anything wrong with it, he watches maybe 30 minutes a day.

my daughter is 3 and she has been mesmerized by the tv since she was a baby. i let her watch when she wants to, but it depends on what you let them watch...when she was younger under the age of two i only let her watch educational shows...in fact she has learned a lot of stuff from watching some of those shows especially dora the explorer...she learned a lot of colors, numbers and things like that in english as well as in spanish. now that she is 3 i do let her watch other cartoons as well, just don't sure the tv as a babysitter for the kid just so that you dont have to deal with them. now that she is older she'd usually rather play than watch tv...but i haven't seen any harm in her watching. i think that it all depends on what you allow children to watch.

but definately stick to kid friendly shows and stuff...don't let them watch any shows geared toward teens or adults...you definately dont want to scare them.

My son is thriving on Blue's Clues, Looney Tunes, and Sesame Street, as much as I can handle. It isn't the quantity, but the quality... And I'm a stay at home mom, so I watch with him. It's more like an interactive game thatn blind boob tube... It's on, but he rarely just sits in front of it. He usually plays quietly with his toys, and will stop to watch when there's a song or something, and go back to playing again.
I do admit that I let Ole Blue babysit my son some mornings when I'm really tired or depressed (I have Bipolar Disorder). I feel bad about it, but that's the best I can do sometimes...

Your parenting strategy may work great in your family, but I'm not you...

I think that the negative effect depends on the type of programs that they watch on tx. My seven month old watches tv for a couple of hours a day, I like to put baby shows on for him. But ratings are there for a reason, my cousin let her 2 year old watch R rated movies by herself and she told her she was going to shoot her. I guess that taught her that lesson even after I told her that was really stupid of her to do.

I don't necessarily believe it affects their brain development, but I can say my children never seemed to be interested in the TV under the age of two but I did have the television on because it got them used to the noise so they weren't jumping , being startled to every sound.

yeah of course, my baby was mesmerized by the tv since he was a newborn, he loves it. He watches his cartoons in the morning while he is having his bottle then he has a play and watches it on and off while hes playing. Theres nothing wrong with it. He is learning heaps from the educational ones. Numbers, colours, animals etc. Then later on at night after hes had a bath and my shows are on he will watch them on and off while he has a play. Tv is great for kids.
