I don't think any country can be labelled the 'greatest country on earth'. I've travelled quite extensively and in my opinion each and every culture has some wonderful attributes to give and some that are not so good. I live in Australia and it's fantastic - but I wouldn't call it the greatest country on earth. For me it might be but for others not so.
For me, each country is as varied in it's culture and richness as human beings are from each other. No person can claim to be the best on earth and I don't feel any country really can either.

P.S: To all those who've just stated that America is the only country on earth that has freedom of speech - you're very much mistaken. You may be surprised to find that dictatorships are not as rife as you may believe... Many citizens from many countries can speak thier minds about thier government and collectively have the power to make changes. In fact, about 70 percent of the world's population.

I, too, love America. More specifically, the people and the history of our country. I was in the military for 10 years, and I fully support each person who is serving-past, present or future.
I am sometimes ashamed and embarrassed by our government and the way that we are portrayed to the rest of the world. We, the citizens, are no different than any citizens of any nation. We are all just trying to make it. There is one difference, however, and it is not so slowly being erased. That is our right to free speech and thought.
I think that it is getting close to the time for people to take peaceful action. It is not un-patriotic to disagree with our gov't. It is in fact the very idea that our nation was founded upon. By the people, of the people, and for the people.
Sometimes I cry because we are losing the bigger picture of what makes our country so great.

Sorry for the rant.

EDIT- Free speech as a guaranteed right by the constitution.

Our country is the greatest country on earth, despite the horrible leadership. The people of this country are what makes it great.

It's the best place in the world to live poor, so that makes it the greatest country in the world.

I definitely do. I'm not a world traveler or anything and have never lived anywhere else, but where else can someone yell and scream at the gov't and organize openly to boot it out when it becomes so detrimental to our well-being? Where we have a press that isn't afraid to disagree with our gov't and come out with facts that support it's misdeeds. Yes, there are many things wrong here, but they can be corrected at the ballot box. There are still many good things to.

I do. I'm just disappointed with our current leadership, but am ready to exercise my right to vote in the next few elections. And I love living here and being able to exercise my freedom of speech to speak out against the current leadership. I wouldn't want to live in any other country.

America isn't a country but 2 continents. Do you mean the USA? Then say it. And the citizens of USA have to be called US-Americans.

If you make the USA greater than they are you continue the colonialist ideas ...

I SURE DO. Yes we have a lot of problems but we manage to solve them without violence or overthrowing the government. This is also the only country where you can call you government every vile name you can think of and not be arrested or shot.May be we are spoiled with all our freedoms. We have forgotten to act with pride.

despite the War on Error staged by the Sitcom President, America remains a good nation. Hopefully it won't get plunged into some fascist police state devoid of all basic civil liberties, which it is going should the GOP keep its grasp on Congress any longer........
