I note that typical garden solar lights have the solar panel directly connected to the battery/light. What I would like to know is ...... Is there a loss of efficiency/energy if the solar panel is remote ( say 2-3 metres/yards) and connected by electrical wire to the battery/light ?

No. You could move the panel away 2-3 yards without a current loss. Technical Info? Well there would be a very slight voltage drop, but probably would not be measurable in 2-3 yards unless you used a really small conductor.

There might be minimal loss but remember, home solar panels are roof mounted, wires run to a remotely located battery, then through the house wires to the devices.
The loss should be insignificant ( unless you use cheap aluminum wire or something )

Electrical wires tend to be very efficient.
The resistance is close to nothing.
All you need is an insulator to protect the wire, an it should be fine.
Also, you can use fiber-optic cables, because they can disperse the light well. They are cheap and do not need maintenance. However, Solar systems are EXPENSIVE. Good luck.
