It beeps once every 30 secs or so and I don't know why. No, it is not going off. It does this every few nights, usually late at night, like 11pm, it will just suddenly start beeping like this. I don't know how to make it stop. Does anyone have any idea why it is doing this or how to make it stop? The batteries are fine, it has gone off recently. Help please!

You can get a new one for around 5 or 6 dollars.
If you're loosing sleep over it, just replace it.

They're easy to stop - just a tad harder than before.
Now they won't close or fit without a 9 volt battery installed, so you have to install a dead one now.
Too many people were removing the batteries and not replacing them.

Actually, if it is beeping - and even though it went off after it stared beeping - it's likely that is the designed behavior. They would design it to warn you a little bit ahead of time and not when it would stop functioning in 12 hours.

You know the battery is fine - how?
By pushing the test button on the detector.
That only checks that the detector works, which it will - even for a month or two - maybe even 3.
After the battery low starts beeping.

Buy a brand new name brand 9 volt battery and try that.

Miscellaneous:
Somebody told me on some A/C ones I have that the 1/2 life of the radioactive element that's used to detect the smoke only lasts so long and (well, yes it would) anyway making it almost useless after 10 years or so.

I had another one near the bathroom that beeped whenever someone opened the door after a shower and the steam came out.

Wow! A bunch of people here who never inhaled that's for sure!
If cigarettes don't set them off, pot smoke sure isn't going to unless you're blowing it right into the detector or it's a party and you can't see across the room for the pot smoke.

Usually if you change the batteries that will stop. Just because the batteries have enough juice to allow the alarm to sound doesn't mean that they aren't low. Seriously for the price of a battery it's worth a try...

If that doesn't work buy a new one. It could be that you have an electrical short inside the unit somewhere...

If it seems as if it is going off around the same time every night maybe there are other factors involved. Is it anywhere near a window that it could be picking up smoke from outside?? Do you live in an apartment building where it could be your neighbors pot smoke??

And if none of the above is it buy a Ouija board. LOL!!

Smoke Detector Beeps Once

Usually it means change the battery... try the reset button.

Sometimes high humidity might make it go wacky... is it near the bathroom door or anything? (Or do you live in a particularly humid area?)

How old is the detector? (They CAN wear out like everything else.)

Has anything else changed in your house recently? (i.e. is your heat coming on for the first few times in the middle of the night when it's colder out? Sometimes that can cause a burning smell although I've never had a smoke detector sensitive enough to pick up on this.) Renovations, earthquakes etc. that might have loosened something?

If all else fails I'd replace the detector. You don't wanna be depending on a faulty one to wake you in the middle of the night if there's an emergency. Better safe than sorry.

The reason it is beeping is to inform u that there are either no batteries or the batteries are dead. The government require the smoke detectors to beep so it alerts the consumer when it is time to change the batteries. After the batteries have been replaced, the beeping should stop. U can call the people who installed the detector if it was installed recently, if not the call the company. There should be a battery hookup thou

Smoke Alarm Beeping Once

Do you have multiple smoke detectors? Are they connected together? One of them has a battery in there that needs changing. That is the purpose of the 30 second beep.

I would try to replace the batteries...or just move it to another part of the house. If it still beeps in the other part of the house, then remove the batteries and put them back in, sometimes that works.

Smoke detectors have a mind of their own, I swear. Once I got so frustrated, I actually hit it with a hammer, to no avail. I then stuck it in a bucket of water. Still beeped. Finally, I threw it in the burn barrel. It was beeping as it melted! It was creepy, actually!

If its legal, disconnect it and bring it down. It may need a battery replacement or cleaning of the inside sensors. If its under warranty/service contract, ask a qualified engineer to have a look at it.

After the servicing and reinstallation, be sure to test it out with a cigarette or something.
