I am currently talking a Philosohpy class and I now have to read the Anti Christ and write an response. I am very upset by his selection because it is offesive to my beliefs. I wounder if he would assign us such a paper that insults Islam or any other belief?
My husband says to just write the paper and go on but I am pissed off. I believe this is not nessary for such a class . I believe that higher education is learning why you belive in what you do not insult your beliefs.

Please keep in mind I did read Nietzsche's
work Ch 1-23 which he copied off for us with his own notes in the margins. I should of explained that better. I feel as if I now have to take him on because I sure in the hell am not going to agree with his point of
view.

if you find the reading assignment offensive and you have to write a response, then it sounds like this is the perfect assignment for you. read the article, find an argument, and pick it apart. you shouldn't have trouble picking it apart if your beliefs are contrary to what is being said in the article. just be rational when writing your response and attack the premises of the author's argument instead of just going after the conclusion. if you do this, you'll be defending your beliefs in a way that should get you a good grade. that's a good thing, right??

Your husband is right - write the paper and life goes on! Depends on how you looked at the situation - positive or negative. I don't think it's meant as an insult. It could be a good opportunity (since it's offensive to your beliefs) to write how you really feel. The same thing you would do if the subject was Christ and to write a response :-)

sometimes theres going to be things that will rattle your cage..but in the end you should try and write a paper. In uni or whatever there are no exaclty correct responses depending on question or paper...if its on a book then just do it..but you did sign up for the philosophy class yeh? so sometimes you just gotta deal with it..i mean i dont believe in evolution but its something i come across now and then in some projects..if you feel that offended then just write the paper with what you believe..give the proffesor a shock...then if he asks just tell him/she how you feel about it all...im sure they will understand..i mean they have beliefs themselves right? why cant you stand up for what you believe in then..it will be cool..good luck x

Philosophy has been known to rock religious beliefs.....Are you talking about Nietzsche? It is hell to get through, but you can be unbiased regarding YOUR opinion of it. After reading it, delving into it, blah blah...you will come to understand the insecurities these atheists had and how such insignificant mind trips really sent them into cosmic inner turmoil and constant angst. It took me a while to suffer through it, but I am glad I did. It is TOTALLY necessary. It is philosophy, not theology. Besides, you'll be able to prove self knowledge in it's purest argumentative state..

A response doesn't have to be positive. Read it, and formulate your own opinon on it, and try to take the good and the bad, and write an objective paper on it. Just because its not what you believe doesn't mean you can't read it and formulate a reasonable and informative (by actually reading it) paper on it.

If you are not open to the beliefs and opinions of others you should probably withdraw from the class. Philosophy, in no way, is a subject that exists to agree with or support anyone's ideology. It is there to make you think. One must always check their faith at the door if one wishes to think.

Write just what you asked us. Tell him about the book and then give your response to the book and to the class and his assignment. This is a learning experience on writing when you are mad. Go for it. Let it out and tell him exactly what you thought about the book.

maybe he is asking you to write this paper to see your reaction.... IT IS PSYCHOLOGY after all......
If this is not the case and he is just another Liberal idiot masquerading as a college professor... AS MOST ARE!!! .. Then just write the paper and stick to your guns, and beliefs. If he gives you a bad grade you can ask that your paper be independently reviewed by an outside professor and see if it was truly a bad paper or just prejudice grading by this moron.
either way it is more important for you to follow your beliefs than try to please him.
Hope that helps
Good luck

In order to learn, you must learn both sides. Perhaps the professor wants to how you recat. Write the most angry, heartfelt, and well researched paper you have ever wrote. Put those feelings to work for you.

For a philosophy class, you kinda have to suck it up. I think I was offended in someway or another everyday in philosophy. You could bring it to your professor's attention and see if he would be willing to give you a topic that was not so offensive to you. You never know. Good luck!!
