It is a sign of ownership. Does he exhibit possessive or controlling attributes in other ways? Because what he's basically doing is marking his territory.

He is leaving his mark. A hickie is like branding a cow. Men do this to show what they have....if you were having sex during the time that he gave you a hickie it might have started out for pleasure but in the end it is still a branding. It is like when a dog marks its territory.

Stay away from boys that like to give hickeys. It doesn't look nice, makes everyone think that you're a slut and it sends out all the wrong signals. If a boy really likes you, he wouldn't disrespect you that way.
