I am aware that this city has a pretty bad reputation, and well it's completely true it's depressing here and boring. But how did it get the reputation, has anyone been here. Personally I can't wait to get the hell out of here.

The place is a hole, and sinking ever deeper. The good ol' days of booming industry and jobs for all are GONE FOREVER. I grew up there and the place depressed me so much I left the country 15 years ago and never went back.

What is cool about the place is that the people are very nice and know how to party. I just can't figure out why people stay there. Snow sucks too.

Yea green guy is right. Buffalo used to be an economic powerhouse. Along with Cleveland and other northern cities. But as times changed they refused to. Its just as much as what green guy said in addition to insular city management. Then it became an Upstate vs. NYC thing which further alienated them from progressive positions. if you look at it NYC is healthy and vibrant while the restof the state suffers miserably. Now ifyou ant to by a house Buffalo is great because they are all cheap, but there is no economic vitality anymore. You know, if city leaders were smart they would turn westward towards Toronto. Create Buffalo as a satellite city of Toronto. yea its a 100 miles away but as the Canadian dollar gets stronger people will desire cheap housing and a nice docile lifestyle. Especially as Toronto becomes the engine of the Canadian economy. You see cities like DC and New York that have people commuting from 100 miles away. What will ruin this is the NYS tax system. But anyway, Buffalo will reach it bottom soon and then people will start moving back. Will they bring industry and jobs? Dont know? But so far the US is sending African immigrants to Buffalo. Sending Bosnians to Utica.

I believe there are multiple answers to this question, I will try to take a stab at a few of them:
1. Buffalo and the Niagara region had been, in the past an industrial location, where the factories built their plants and enjoyed the abundance of electricity and waterways that are here. Society is changing, however, with the advent of computers. So, many of these factories either closed or moved away to a cheaper location.
2. New York State and City officials started taxing these businesses heavily because they realized there was a lot of money to be made from these big corporations. In so doing, and with the change of the industrial revolution to the age of information, these corporations packed up and moved, because the costs of doing business here was severely effecting their bottom line.
3. With the citizens of this area, the ones who worked in these factories, losing their jobs and starting to age, they moved to greener pastures (IE down south) where the economy was growing and not shrinking like here.
4. When those plants and factories were here, they created a lot of waste. Polluted the water, the air and we have many landfills filled with their leftover garbage. Though this isn't in the media, and this is only my opinion, all these toxins have made alot of people sick. WNY is highest in the nation for cancer (that is why the leading research facility is here, Roswell Park) and Multiple Schlorisis.

My grandmother accounts that Western New York was once a really great place to live and people flocked here, but these conditions (and I am sure more) have changed the face of our city. I would like to think however that we are merely in a transitional period, going from the old industrial society to a more tourist friendly place...afterall, there is one of the great wonders of the world here. Canada is taking avantage of it, why can't we?
