Well, a uniform presentation does have it's advantages in that it sticks to the theme.

However, using a couple of different slides in the presentation, to highlight something wouldn't be such a bad idea, would it?

I agree with you in that different backgrounds for each and every slide does make it look a bit gaudy; but, if tastefully included in a uniform presentation, a couple of different slides could highlight the point made and make the presentation not boring.

All the best.

Cheers

Hi there :)

I currently teach online training and programming as my profession, and help host and create ppt's for any vendor my company has coming in for any presentations.

While it may "seem really neat" to add dozens of different animations, intros, etc to a powerpoint, having a conformed, concise, uniform presentation helps you in several ways:

1.) Your presentation has a more cognitive feel to it, making it come across as much more professional. Most companies use a pre-made template for their powerpoints for this very reason. Accurate and consistent presentations are a key part of any powerpoint.

2.) Less distraction! Think about what you're presenting to your audience. Do you really want them to be paying more attention to the neat designs you've created with your powerpoint, or to the message you're trying to get across?

3.) Umph/Whoa/Whow power! (I don't know how else to explain it). Saving those "impressive" animations for portions of your powerpoint that are actually important and of great significance can help draw attention to the little details when you need them to the most. Otherwise, Animation 34 of 78 in your powerpoint, (you know, the key one that's your selling point that all the VP's of the company are here to learn about?) is just going to seem like "just another slide," which is definitely not something you want.

Hope that helps give you some direction :)

Yes, I think it is far better to have some continuity of design features. It can be really annoying for the audience if you change colours of text too much and go crazy with the special features. The audience can focus more on what message you are trying to get across if they are not distracted.

Generally, yes.

However, you may use different slide designs to signal a change in topic. But don't use too many designs or change too often as it can be distracting to your audience.

Perhaps, the instructor doesn't think there is much to complain about and as long as your only need, is to impress him/her then, go for it! It is your intructor's job to decide what is appropriate. I'm sure this is a time when content rules over style, but if you need to impress your employer... There will come a time when style will be as important as content, but for now be as unconventional as you like, or not!

To make a PowerPoint presentation look more professional, you should use one design, with a color scheme that is not hard for people to see.

I think it is a matter of choice and what you think is appropriate. After all, the presentation is a reflection of your abilities. Just be sure all data is accurate and definitely no misspellings.
