In computing, JPEG (pronounced JAY-peg; is a commonly used standard method of compression for photographic images. The name JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the joint ISO/CCITT committee which created the standard. The group was organized in 1986, issuing a standard in 1992 which was approved in 1994 as ISO 10918-1. JPEG should not be confused with MPEG, the Moving Picture Experts Group, which produces compression schemes for motion pictures.
JPEG/JFIF is the format most used for storing and transmitting photographs on the World Wide Web. For this application, it is preferred to formats such as GIF, which has a limit of 256 distinct colors that is insufficient for colour photographs, and PNG, which produces much larger image files for this type of image. The compression algorithm is not as well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics, and thus the PNG and GIF formats are preferred for these types of images.

IF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format using a palette of up to 256 distinct colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. The format was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. It also supports animations and even allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame.

This means that the JPEG can display many more colors than a GIF, but the GIF can have animated images.

- The GIF (pronounced DJIF by many, including its designer; pronounced GIF with a hard G by many others) stands for Graphics Interchange Format and is one of the two most common file formats for graphic images on the World Wide Web. The other is the JPEG.

The link below will tell you how to convert the files from one format to another:

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
JPEG is a standardised image compression mechanism. JPEG is designed for compressing either full-colour (24 bit) or grey-scale digital images of "natural" (real-world) scenes.

It works well on photographs, naturalistic artwork, and similar material; not so well on lettering, simple cartoons, or black-and-white line drawings (files come out very large).

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
The Graphics Interchange Format was developed in 1987 at the request of Compuserve, who needed a platform independent image format that was suitable for transfer across slow connections. It is a compressed (lossless) format (it uses the LZW compression) and compresses at a ratio of between 3:1 and 5:1

jpeg (.jpg) usually generated from a camera, or specific software. GIF files are many times clipart files from the internet. This answer is probably oversimplified. Take a look in file types handled by a program such as Corel Draw. There are lots of different file filters in their program. Also Pagemaker.

A jpeg has higher quality because it uses the RGB system (Red Green Blue) witch enables you to use up to 16 million different colors. Where a gif is more for cartoons and animations because it only can take up to 255 colors.
