When water evaporates, the minerals and salts in it remain behind. Since rain water is evaporated water, it lacks these healthy elements. In addition many urban areas are full of pollution that gets into the rainwater. Conditioned tap water is best for your fish.

The best thing for good growth for a goldfish is a big tank and regular water changes.

Goldfish will not build up a good resistance to infections if you use rainwater or distilled water. If your using the fish as feeder fish then dont worry and use either rain or distilled water.
You can use water from the tap but you should be aware that it can contain dangerous levels of chlorine and metals. You should always treat tap water with a chlorine neutralizer.

As for fish size it depends a lot on the size of the tank, the frequency of the water changes, the condition of the water, the diet and the amount of stress placed on the fish. Perform a 10-20% water change every week, dont overfeed and make sure your filter is rated to handle at least 150% of the size of your tank.

Goldfish need a high PH compared to tropicals. They are fine in any range from 7.5 up.

The Tap water does need a Dechlor/ammonia binder. Prime is the best since it will not effect the Ph and eat up the gh & kh content that goes hand in hand.

Never use RO or Distilled water, the ro is meant for salt water fish where they are actually putting the minerals and electrolites back in with the sea salt. So useing RO water is a death sentence and distilled water is a ph crash looking to happen and sick fish.

Water that has been filterd lacks essential electrolites and minerals which all fish need. And the fish, filters and ay live plants all need calcium and magnesium.

The ROT for Fancy goldies is 10 gls each, 15-20 gls each for single tail species which grow much larger then fancy's. Filtration needs to be 10x, IE: 20 gl x 10= 200 gph
Prime is the best dechlor and ammonia binder out.

Goldfish release a hormone that if not taken out with regular water changes will stunt their growth. So it doesn't really matter what kind of water it is as long as the water is safe and wont kill them. I use tap water though and use Prime to take the chlorine and other bad stuff out.

There is no absolute answer.
Rainwater maybe too acidic and polluted for goldfish to thrive in. I wouldn't suggest using pure rainwater.
Tap water greatly depends on the mineral, buffering and pH value of the water. The tap water from one city to the next is always different.

the larger the tank the more the fish will grow. I doubt the type of water has much to do with it. But I know feeder gold fish that have grown to almost 6 inches long because they are in a 10 gallon tank. Clean the water regularly and feed them regularly and they'll get huge in no time.

Green water is great source of water for fancies. I kept my fancies in my outside greenwater pond in the summer and in a few months, they grew 2-3 inches.

neither cos goldfish usaully live in dirty water but they are very adaptable if you goldfish was living in clean water then u mus keep it clean and vise versa. They can die if u let the tank get dirty, then there's a problem because there may not be enuff oxygen in the water 4 the fish to use. However goldfish are unable to live in salty water because salt gets formed on their gills making it difficult 4 them to breath
