Oh come now, just because we're all MENSA laureates! Uh - well, my northern compadre, we often deserve the rap, now don't we? While we certainly aren't all the spawn of the Devil, we do have our attitudes, and what we think and do has far, far more impact upon the rest of civilization than is really justified. And when our behavior is demonstrably leading the world into a much more dangerous era - well, I can understand why a good many folks would be upset with us.
While I will not lie down and let you roll over me, I will acknowledge your legitimate concerns and try to work with you on convincing my fellow Yanks to help address those concerns.
Sadly, it sometimes takes pointing out that some of the time their behaviors and attitudes ARE dumb. I mean, a mule is capable of a lot of very useful work, but first you got to get his attention - and standard lore has it that to do so you first pick up a stout cudgel such as a two-by-four board and whack him across the head with it. Some of my fellow Yanks require quite a large board...

Well - because Americans get alot of bad press.
I'm Canadian too, but I live in England. Most of the world 'Loves to Hate America'. They will eat McDonalds, they will buy Nike shoes, they love Hollywood celebs, and pretty much buy into anything that American culture has produced. But when it comes to the American people themselves, the world just doesn't like them.
Secondly, being Anti-American is the current fad. Most people who slam Americans don't know any personally either. I have alot of friends who are American and really I have nothing bad to say about any of them. They are intelligent, respectful, and kind but perhaps a little dim when it comes to world geography and politics. I suppose that is the most insulting characteristic that they display.
Other people groups feel instantly offended because it has been broadcast near and far that Americans in general, know nothing about the world around them, and yet a world on which they have such a heavy impact. Yes, this insult makes people full of spite for them.
Sadly - only they (Americans) can change that with some effort.

I'm an American and I respect and offer an objective, logical, rational and educational challenge to ask me, direclty and indirectly, any question you seem fit. If you are asking for some generalization of why do some Americans or those on Yahoo respond in jest or with negativity to your quiry it's probably because you werent' specific in your questioning, and since so many on Yahoo answers use this forum as an entertainment discussion arena, and not of real consequence,, and it's not an appropriate forum for discussing serious debated issues, thus you weren't replied to seriously. Keep in mind ., Americans feel deeply self righteous, AS I DO about defending our country, as I am sure you do. So many feel our efforts in defending ourselves and other nations has been forshadowed and used by other countries advantages, without them having to have any political insight or out right position in our motives, or we don't generally appreciate free loaders, while many of us bust our butt to defend positons and laws, and protect bordering coutries who might sight back and feel protected based on our own actions.... or we defend merely principles to which our country was founded upon.
Many of us, respect and encourage insight of ideas and cultural diversity and change,, but we want to be respected like anyone else.. many answers will be witty, as you have people in your culture who are witty and don't make claims seriously,, we want to be respected as you would want to be respected, we recognize and hope you appreciate our differences in culture and society, and understand your own differences from us. But like anything,, when it comes to the wire, we love the U.S.A. and will clearly die for it, defend it, and uphold it.. it's about pride and what steps we have taken, which many feel are beyond what other countries, and states will do,, despite our political differences, we defend it to the utmost,, and we dont' see a commonality in other countries on that issue.. respectfully submitted!

You can certainly ask a question, but some Americans will take offense because they are ultra-patriotic, and I realize that many people from other countries hate Americans. Also, many Americans are self loathing, or think its cool to speak poorly of their country.

most people think that Americans are dumb, and will blame any issue in America to the lack of intelligence of its citizens. plus, if they have no clue and just answer to get 2 points, they'll just say anything that comes to their mind

I don't know about they---maybe because I'm from another country. For me, I think everyone has right to ask questions about American issues if they want. Maybe they are people who feels offensive if you ask them about an American issue.

Everybody has an opinion, I guess. And, it's very popular to bash Americans and the government these days.
