Well, I have to do a 500-word essay which is pretty short, but about how our represntative democracy is becoming more like a direct democracy through the use of electronic communications. I guess the idea would be how people are more easily getting their opinions out their through radio, TV, the Internet, blogs, etc electronic communications. I just can't find a place ot start, or much to write about. Any ideas?

Back when our republic was created, the average citizen didn't know about the day to day goings on of government and the government didn't know the day to day sentiment of the people. Now, because of the information age, people know what's going on and the government gets feedback very quickly which allows legislators to be more in tuned with the plurality of the citizens on a daily basis verses the few times he returns home or gets a letter from home.

But we are not a direct democracy, we are a representative democracy. The internet exists, and as another poster mentioned, we can get referrendums onto ballots, but this does not a direct democracy make!!! Just because we have more outlets for media does not change our form of government, the way we elect officials or the way that congress runs. The US is not anywhere nearer to becoming a direct democracy than it was before the internet or radio.

I hope your essay is not due Monday.

This country was founded to be a Republic.
Due to the bankruptcy, of the United States,
the American people systemically have lost their sovereign powers in lieu of a Democracy.
